#YearOfFood – Strawberry

6TH JULY 2016

The quintessentially British strawberry is now in its peak season. With all its fragrant and juicy sweetness, strawberries are a firm favourite for many of us, and to make our celebration of the humble red fruit that little bit more timely, we’re in the midst of Wimbledon – the famous home of strawberries and cream (and tennis!) Is there truly a dish that’s more evocative of the British summer than strawberries and cream?

From enjoying strawberries simply on their own to thirst-quenching summer cocktails and indulgent desserts, we’ve got some fantastic ideas to provide you with some fruity inspiration.

Classic strawberry jam: Making jam is a relatively quick and simple process, and once you’ve let it set you’ll have a deliciously sweet accompaniment to buttered toast, scones with clotted cream, or the filling for a classic Victoria sponge.

Strawberry and white chocolate cheesecake: A creamy, sweet, white chocolate cheesecake with a buttery, crumbly biscuit base is perfectly completed with a topping of juicy strawberries.

Strawberry and rhubarb crumble: The sharpness of roasted rhubarb delightfully compliments sweet strawberries to create a distinctly British mouthful of flavour. Coupled with a crunchy crumble topping and a dollop of vanilla ice cream, you’ve got yourself the perfect summer dessert.

Strawberries with basil and balsamic: If you’re after a simpler way to serve your strawberries, try adding sugar, balsamic vinegar and some fresh basil. It may sound a bit left-field, but it’s certainly one of the most enjoyable ways to eat a strawberry.

Strawberry daiquiri: Our suggestions wouldn’t be complete with a refreshing summer tipple! Simply combine white rum, sugar, lime juice and strawberries in a blender with a handful of ice and you’re ready to serve with a strawberry or two to garnish.
