Christmas is very nearly here and the festive cheer is building up! Lots of you will have your festive feasts planned, from prepping for your deliciously golden roasted turkey to perfecting crispy roasties and the complete works of sides for the main event.

With the impending festive feast in mind, I’ve got the perfect Spicy Chocolate Orange Cake recipe for an indulgent sweet – just try and make sure you’ve got room! This recipe is full of festive spices and fragrant zest to evoke the holiday season.

175g soft butter
175g caster sugar
2 medium eggs beaten
70 ml whole milk – room temperature
175g self-raising flour – sieved
60g melted chocolate (70%)
2 teaspoons of baking powder
Zest of 2 large oranges (one for icing)
Pinch of cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg
Pinch of mixed spice
Pinch of ground ginger

Line and grease a 10” cake tin
Pre-heat the oven to 160°C gas mark 4
Add the butter, sugar and orange zest into the mixing bowl
Using the beater and bowl, cover and mix until light and fluffy
Add the egg and milk and continue to mix
Add the flour and baking powder and mix until completely combined
Pour into the cake and even out with the spatula
Fill batter no more than 2/3 of the tin to avoid overflow
Bake for 35-40 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean
Turn out the cake into a cooling rack
Allow to cool

Orange liqueur icing:
200g icing sugar
4 tablespoons of orange liqueur or water
Mix together to form a thick icing

Pour over icing and using a spatula cover the top of the cake
Sprinkle with orange zest
